I have chosen not to name the app here it is not a well-known one, and appears to have been made by a small developer. So I pulled up the app’s privacy settings and noticed that while it promised not to share details I ‘entered manually’ with its third-party partners, the terms and conditions’ language cleverly avoided ruling out sharing information about aggregated data – like patterns or trends. I have used this particular app for so long I don’t even remember when I downloaded it, or why I chose that brand. ![]() I began to feel uneasy as my mind made the connection between my period tracking app believing I had missed a cycle 10 days ago, and my Facebook account trying to sell me pregnancy paraphernalia within days of my period appearing to be ‘late’. I corrected my cycle, and almost instantly the baby ads just stopped. I had simply forgotten to log last month’s cycle properly, and, because I have notifications for that app turned off, I hadn’t noticed when I didn’t complete the entry. It was informing me that my period was very, very ‘late’. On Sunday, I opened the app to make an update, only to find an alert flashing at me. Like many women, I use a period tracking app to chart my monthly cycle. It became clear Facebook actually thought I was pregnant. Mostly that’s because I reasoned it was only fair for Facebook’s mysterious algorithms to assume that I - a 30-year-old woman in my childbearing prime from advertisers’ point-of-view - might be interested in baby content.Īlso, I thought, it might be a result of ‘liking’ posts from friends with babies across my social media profiles.īut then early this week I made a discovery that transformed the experience from odd to downright creepy. ![]() ![]() But I was not concerned enough to investigate further, or to flag up the ad as unwanted content. It was a little like an overbearing relative asking me when I’m going to hurry up and get married. It didn’t bother me at first-I found it curious, mildly irritating and even a bit funny. It was bizarre because I have no children - and not that it’s anyone’s business, but I don’t plan on having any soon. Out of nowhere, I was being targeted with sponsored posts for everything from pregnancy health vitamins to baby clothing and children’s books. Last week, I noticed something curious: My Facebook feed was suddenly becoming cluttered with mother and baby advertisements.

The number of cards you should have per note depends on the number of fields in thenote.Īt a minimum, use one card per note. So don’t overload on card types per note, as it will reduce the number of notes you can learn. After maybe 1-200 reviews, I’m really tired - that’s about the maximum I can do in a day when I’m doing semi-intensive study. If Patricia loses all three hearts, she will have to start the level over. During each level, the player has three hearts (called her "Heart Drive", in universe), with the player losing one heart if Patricia is hurt by an enemy, comes into contact with spikes or is pushed into the screen by a block change (Checkpoints created allow Patricia to respawn at that point in the case of the latter two). Along with the ability to jump and shoot, Patricia has the ability to push in and out blocks dotted around the stage with her "Siren Helmet", using them as platforms or a means to destroy certain enemies. It is now time to rediscover the American past.Ī reorientation of U.S. history remain incomplete without engaging with this history. Focus upon Native American history must remain an essential practice of American historical inquiry. The argument is simple: a full telling of American history must account for the dynamics of struggle, survival, and resurgence that frame America’s Indigenous past. My new work thus draws upon an outpouring of scholarship that has made Indigenous history a growing field. I am a part of a generation of historians whose collective works have reframed critical elements of the nation’s past, particularly its earliest chapters. Many scholars are building a different view of the past. Indigenous absence has been a long tradition of American historical analysis. Either as hostile impediments or romanticized peoples awaiting discovery, American Indians appear as passive subjects in a larger drama, understudies in the very dramas remaking their homelands. They have formed the historic center of our national story and have done so at the expense of the first Americas-Native peoples-who have remained consistently excluded from the continent’s history. They think and name, conquer and settle, govern and own. He claimed to have discovered “a new world.”įor centuries, America and the New World have become ideas and synonyms that convey a sense of wonder and possibility made manifest by discovery, a historical act in which explorers are the protagonists. If history provides the common soil for a nation’s growth and a window into its future, it is time to reimagine U.S. Generations of other imperialists, for example, preceded the Puritans, who we have been told governed a commonwealth in the “wilderness.” Similarly, histories that celebrated pioneers upon western “frontiers” have remained incomplete without attention to broader tales of expansion and empire. For so long, the field’s exclusive focus on Europeans and their descendants has left us with more problems than answers. ![]() Its old paradigms have grown thin and worn. One woman showed up and asked, with sincerity, "Where do you keep the fairies?" - as if the attraction had them in a jar with holes punched in the lid. "It violates some pretty basic rules," she said.Īlso passionate about the Vortex are what Elena called its "Fan Club" of enthusiastic repeat visitors, as well as first-timers who are drawn to it by some inexplicable urge ("I don't know why I had to come here but I did"). Elena said that some visitors have yelled at her or stomped off because the Vortex topsy-turveyed their idea of the way things should be. "One of the more esoteric explanations," said Elena, "is that your height changes because you're walking on something that looks level, and it even measures level in three dimensions, but you're actually walking up and down a hill in a sixth dimension that you're not capable of perceiving." This kind of talk drives traditionalists nuts. Litster's nearly incomprehensible "Notes and Data" booklet (available in the Vortex gift shop) attributes the hoodoo to a number of possible causes, including warped atoms, electromagnetic antigravity, oscillating "terralines," or perhaps something buried inside the hill such as unknown minerals or a subterranean super-machine left by prehistoric aliens.Įlena Cooper demonstrates the standing broom.ĭespite Litster's efforts, the powers of the Oregon Vortex remain a mystery - which means that people keep coming up with new theories to explain it. Nowadays, everyone is welcome, and all of Litster's original research was destroyed in a barn fire around 1962. Growing up fast in the Vortex: just walk to the right. Elena said that when she first started working at the Vortex, its long-standing policy was to forbid entry to anyone who might be from the Mystery Spot, in case they were out to steal more secrets. Bad blood between the two attractions lasted for decades. It opened in 1941, changed "Mystery House" to "Mystery Spot," and thus added a classic term to the roadside lexicon. Within a few years, copycat shacks began appearing in more easily visited areas, including one at the Santa Cruz Mystery Spot. He got frustrated trying to conduct his experiments, so he told them, 'Okay, you can come in, but I'm charging each of you a nickel.' And they paid it."Īccording to Vortex lore, Litster eventually published his experimental findings, but revealed too much, including the exact dimensions of the "House of Mystery" - a real, half-collapsed mine assayer's shack that had slid down a hill into the Vortex. "I figure, people just started showing up. "I always wondered why Litster opened it to the public," she said. "This was a hard place to get to in 1930," said Elena, who added that the only people in these hills at that time were either working or watching a nearby archeological dig. That seems unlikely, because the Vortex was in a terrible spot for opportunistic enterprise: on a wooded hillside, off of a winding, narrow road, in the middle of nowhere. Latter-day skeptics have written off Litster as a con man, out to make a fast buck. ![]() All that's known for certain is that Litster was at the Vortex, conducting experiments (so he said), when he opened it as a tourist attraction in 1930. He claimed that wildlife and Native Americans knew of the spot and shunned it, but the only source of that information was Litster, and he changed his story from time to time, possibly skewed by the demands of tourism ballyhoo or Vortex-madness. The outside world became aware of the Oregon Vortex through John Litster (1886-1959). ![]() Its eerie reputation is usually attributed to some sort of mega freaky mojo, one that science can't - or dare not - explain. Some of the berserk enigmas at the Vortex could be dismissed as optical illusions - but that wouldn't account for the attraction's long-established history of making people feel and act weird. "It's existed probably since the planet existed. "The Vortex is special," said Elena, whose Cooper family has owned the attraction since 1960. But those shacks are copies of the one at the Oregon Vortex, and the Vortex shack is only part of a larger area of disorienting Oregon forest. Pale imitations of these effects can be encountered at "mystery shacks" in amusement parks and other convenient locations. A person's height grows or shrinks depending on where they stand, and some say that they can feel the transformation happen. A lot of people become seasick at the landlocked Vortex. For some visitors, back pains disappear and hangovers get worse. Photographs reveal unseen beams of light. "It's a place that really doesn't make any sense," said Elena Cooper, long-time Vortex manager. Both strands of the plot unfold in compelling and not-always-expected ways. Oliver is focused on a pair of pressing concerns throughout the film: his love for Jordana, a teenage femme fatale in a Louise Brooks bob who has a yen for cruel pranks and “light arson,” and his concern for his parents’ marriage, which is under increasing strain. But he’s also confused and flawed and more likable because of it, and Roberts grounds him in reality, keeping him from coming across as precious as my review might make him sound. He reads the dictionary and adopts words like “flagitious” and “atavistic” into his speech and takes a girl to see Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc on a date. But perhaps it’s more accurate to say that he’s this film’s Oliver Tate, a character imbued with enough love and personality by his creators that he’s able to stand on his own, even when he’s name-checking Salinger. One could say that Oliver Tate, the wide-eyed, shaggy haired teenage protagonist played by Craig Roberts, is this film’s Antoine Doinel, or perhaps its Holden Caulfield (Oliver appears to be a fan of both characters). It’s a story of teenage trouble that has the style and heft to conspicuously reference The 400 Blows without seeming pompous or ridiculous. ![]() ![]() But Submarine, which Ayoade adapted for the screen from a novel Joe Dunthorne, is sweet and sad in addition to being funny. Fans of British comedy will know Ayoade from his work on comedy shows like The IT Crowd, The Mighty Boosh, and Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, and his sense of humor is evident throughout his narrative feature debut as a director. I still eagerly tell my friends about the movie I loved that I think they might love too, and by the time I sat down to write this review, I had probably already told a half dozen friends about Richard Ayoade’s Submarine, a coming-of-age film that played to a packed house at IFFB following successful screenings at Toronto and Sundance, not to mention a critically acclaimed theatrical run in Britain. ![]() ![]() Enter your email address to receive the manual of TomTom GPS Watch Spark in the language / languages: Dutch as an attachment in your email.
